Emissions Testing

The federal Clean Air Act of 1990 required states to set up vehicle emission inspection programs. However, South Carolina does not require any emission inspections. You should keep this fact in mind if you are planning to move to South Carolina in the near future and bring your car from a state that does require inspections. If you were planning to perform maintenance to comply with that state's law, you might consider holding off on that since it will not be required in South Carolina. If your move will occur before an inspection is required in your former state, you could consider deferring any maintenance costs since the test will not be required in South Carolina. Deferring maintenance could save money that you will need for the costs associated with a move.
