Renewing Your South Carolina Drivers License

If your drivers license has expired you will want to renew it right away. You can renew by mail, online or in person. Read more about each option below.


You may only apply online if you meet the following criteria:

  • Last renewal was in person
  • U.S. citizen
  • License has neither been expired for more than nine months nor suspended
  • No more than five points on your driving record in the last two years
  • Younger than 65

By Mail

To renew by mail, download the renewal form and mail it, along with the apppropriate fee, to the DMV.

  • U.S. citizen
  • License has not been expired more than nine months 
  • No violations totalling more than five points in the last two years
  • No driver suspensions
  • No renewal by mail during last driver renewal period
  • You need to provide insurance information for your vehicle
  • Pay $12.50 for renewal

Additional Information

If you are under 65, you must renew your license every 10 years. If you're over 65, you must renew every five years.
